The results of the project TeToxBeScheit (FKZ: 22041118, funded by German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture) demonstrate a significant reduction effect of catalytic converters and electrostatic precipitators on particulate and gaseous pollutants of logwood-fired stoves. We investigated emission-reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOC, such as formaldehyde, acetamide, and furfural) as well as semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)) and particles (ultrafine to coarse). The comprehensive data of the accompanying human and ecotoxicological effect-based studies confirms the observed reduction potential. The results are published in compact form as a policy brief.

The results suggest that legal requirements (1st BImSchV) fall short of what could be achieved with the state of the art for logwood-fired stoves and the available reduction technology. Emission limits for additional pollutant groups should be set and existing emission limits should be lowered significantly, in order to effectively reduce the emission levels for logwood-fired stoves. We also recommend pushing ahead with the development of retrofit reduction-devices for existing stoves. Marketable and cost-effective catalytic converters are already available for this purpose. Cities and municipalities could initiate a broad implementation of retrofit solutions by funding.
