Tailor-made biomass fuels

The main target of the project is the production of pellets for low-emission combustion of biomass resources, partly containing high concentrations of harmful substances. These substances cause problems in terms of the technical design of the furnace and complicate compliance with emissions regulations. Moreover the raw material is characterized by a low energy density and a low ash softening point leading to furnace slagging and sintering.

To solve these problems the biomass fuels are preprocessed or additives are used. Formulations unproblematic in terms of emissions and combustion are identified by combustion experiments and enable the use of the alternative fuels in heating systems pursuant to the first Federal Immissions Control Ordinance. Additionally, a contracting-model for the alternative fuel is developed in order to guarantee the profitability of the process.
