Every year the institute offers an excursion within the week of Pentecost for students to visit industrial facilities and gain impressions from practical application of our key fields and beyond. This year from 22nd to 25th May nine students accompanied by nine of our staff members visited the Benelux region to explore waste management, energy supply and the industry of raw materials in our neighbouring states. From the waste sector there were visits paid to the waste incinerator AVR Rozenburg in Rotterdam and the hazardous waste incinerator of Indaver nv in Antwerp. Representing the energy industry our trip covered the pumped-storage hydro power plant of SEO in Vianden and the wood gasifier of Xylowatt s.a. in Yvoir. Further, we looked into the metallurgical realm by receiving tours around the steel melt shop of Aperam in Genk and the zinc smelter of Nyrstar BV in Budel. Rounding off the program we explored the industrial harbour of Rotterdam including its container and raw material terminals. We like to thank all our supporters and employees of the respective sites that made our visit possible.
