PhoREKA: New project on sewage sludge treatment at TEER

On 01.02.2019, a new project on sewage sludge treatment and phosphorus recycling will start at TEER. Together with the “Wasserverband Eifel-Rur (WVER)”, the “Erftverband (EV)” and the “Stadtentwässerungsbetriebe Köln (StEB Köln)”, a concept for recovering phosphorus from sewage sludge ash is to be developed for the region of Rur, Erft, Cologne.

With amendments to the sewage sludge ordinance, treatment of sewage sludge is restricted in previously established treatment and disposal paths, such as co-incineration and direct agricultural utilisation, and phosphorus recovery is prescribed. WVER, EV and StEB Köln are planning the construction of a joint mono-incineration plant for environmentally friendly sewage sludge treatment. However, recovery of phosphorus concentrated in the ashes arising in future has not yet been clarified and is to be developed in the PhoREKA project funded by the BMBF.
